DK Integrative Structural Biology
The FWF supported doctoral program 'Integrative Structural Biology' (ISB) is an inter-institutional consortium of scientists, comprising Group Leaders from the University of Vienna and the Medical University of Vienna at the Max F. Perutz Laboratories (MFPL), the Medical University of Vienna and the Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP) in Vienna.
The elucidation of the structures and dynamic interactions of large biological molecules is essential to understanding all biological processes. Our doctoral program provides the students with training in the modern, high-end techniques that are required for today’s structural biology approaches. A key aspect is the integrative nature of the program that will allow the students to choose the appropriate techniques to address a chosen problem.
A unique aspect of the doctoral program ISB is the variety of scientific questions posed by the faculty that will give the students integrative experience in the areas of biochemistry, biophysics, bioinformatics, cell biology, genetics, molecular medicine, pharmacology and virology. Above all, the students will be encouraged to investigate the biological implications of their results.
On completion of their studies, the collegiates will be superbly equipped to meet the exciting scientific challenges of the future in their particular field of choice. Biological and medical research today cannot be performed without expertise in structural biology; our doctoral program offers a unique opportunity to gain such expertise.
Projects within the doctoral program cover a comprehensive range of research areas introducing state-of-the-art techniques, methodology and theory to the PhD students. They will be guided by a supervisor and a PhD committee, a scheme that will ensure an intensive contact and exchange of ideas between the students and the faculty members.
The Doctoral Program is reviewed and funded by the Austrian Science Fund FWF as well as the Medical University of Vienna and the University of Vienna.
Students enroll at either the Medical University of Vienna or the University of Vienna. The world-renown Vienna Biocenter provides the students with a stimulating scientific environment for their studies and the opportunity to learn about a wide range of different biological systems to which structural biology approaches can be applied.
Our PhD Program is also a part of Vienna Doctoral School “Molecules of Life”- the umbrella organization for 7 different PhD Tracks. Vienna Doctoral School (VDS) promotes interdisciplinary research and help excellent PhD students to develop into tomorrow's leading scientists.
Vienna is a lively, modern European city with a high quality of life and outstanding cultural programs and sporting opportunities. Accommodation is affordable and both the health and transport systems are excellent. The location and scientific environment of the DK-plus guarantee a stimulating and challenging graduate study experience.
