Tim Skern visted China and gave a talk with the title "Investigating virus-cell interactions with biochemistry" at the Capital Medical University in Beijing.
The news of his visit and lecture at the university are online at:
Peggy Stolt-Bergner has been interviewed about the biotech research situation in Austria. The interview appeared in the Sunday issue, 23. May 2010, of the newspaper "Kurier". An online version (only in German) was also published. Peggy pointed out the good development in the field of bio-technology of the past years in Austria and emphasised the high-productive research, the excellent infrastructure and the high quality of life in Vienna. She also expressed the request to attract more international researchers to work in Austria. Recruiting turned out to be difficult competing with countries as Great Britain or Sweden with a longer resaerch history and an even better reputation.
The jury has awarded Univ.-Prof. Dr.Tim Skern (Division Molecular Biology) as "Teacher of the Month" of the Medical University of Vienna in May.
With the selection of Tim Skern, the jury is pleased to feature a further representative of our university who convincingly typifies the unity of research and teaching. He also represents this unity at various levels, from the mentoring of graduate students to the provision of scientific information to the non-specialist

Cancer Research Run
What started 2 years ago with 300 runners at the AKH Campus, developed to nearly 2000 participants and more than 20.000 laps at the "3. Krebsforschungslauf" this year in the "Universitätscampus Altes AKH". Each runner had to pay 10 € entry fee, the 5 € for each lap run at this day was sponsored by several partners.
The raised money will be used for cancer research projects, e.g. the development of new therapy methods.

"Laura Bassi Center of Expertise"
Kristina Djinovic-Carugo receives "Laura Bassi Center of Expertise" to develop new methods for production and crystallisation of proteins
Kristina Djinovic-Carugo, Head of the Department of Structural and Computational Biology at the Centre for Molecular Biology at the University of Vienna (Max F. Perutz Laboratories), is one of the eight women receiving a "Laura Bassi Center of Expertise". This initiative of the Ministry of Economy, Family and Youth was created to promote outstanding female researchers. In her project, Djinovic-Carugo and her project partners focus on the development of new methods of protein production for the high-quality demands of structural and functional analysis of proteins to investigate their role in disease and therapy.
Success in science depends nowadays on effective communication in English. This workbook is specifically designed to give under- and post-graduates confidence in writing scientific English. Examples and exercises show how to avoid common errors and how to rephrase and improve scientific texts. The generation of a model manuscript enables the reader to recognise how scientific English is constructed and how to follow the conventions of scientific writing. Guidelines for structuring written work and vocabulary lists will encourage young scientists to develop a concise and mature style. The workbook is accessible to students of many fields, including those of the natural and technical sciences, medicine, psychology and economics.
